In an ongoing project I record the time stamps of text messages sent to me by an elderly woman I cared for over the past couple years. She sends me recurrent updates about the birds she sees outside her window. As her dementia worsens, stretches of silence and clusters of messages trace her hospitalizations, periods of confusion, and moments of clarity. Transcribed by hand onto paper and displayed as a receipt-like scroll that runs down the wall and across the floor, the work transforms a systematic dataset into a record of human connection. By reducing our bond to repetitive marks, the piece chronicles a relationship where each message is a small act of connection.
