The history of art contains many examples of the painting genre ‘vanitas,’ of which a subgenre, ‘homo bulla,’ depicts children blowing bubbles. While a person (homo) appears concrete, life is as fleeting as a bubble (bulla). Bubbles symbolize life’s transience. By casting the bubble wands of my childhood in bronze, I sought to memorialize childhood in my own version of a ‘homo bulla’ painting.
