This piece explores a combination of interests: studio practices, art history, systems, and sharing research. Through generating sixteen rules, I created a system of connections between artists. It links the relationships but is also only one pattern from a limited sampling of research. The result includes both personal relationships and serial numbers, rules and interpretations, tied threads and loose ends.
Rules:
1. Generate a list of 200 artists
2. Arrange artists alphabetically
3. Research connections between the 200 artists
4. Base connections on influential relationships (family, friends, teachers)
5. Translate research into numbers
6. Assign one number per artist
7. Gather 200 hooks and label each one with a numbered sticker
8. Find a structural space
9. Place hooks counterclockwise along the interior perimeter of the structural space
10. Orient hooks to make labels readable from above
11. Represent the connections using red thread tied between the hooks
12. Begin with hook 0001 and end with hook 0200
13. Tie new knots on hooks to the left of pre-existing knots
14. Only connect hooks on adjacent walls
15. Do not weave threads together (lay new threads on top of previous ones)
16. Do not touch remnants of thread after tying knot
